Gingerbread, a living tradition

Gingerbread is an ancient tradition that is still flourishing in many European countries. The oldest gingerbread molds found in Hungary were made more than two thousand years ago. That time, gingerbread cookies were made as a gift for the gods.

As its main ingredient, honey, was really expensive, gingerbread cookies were the highlight of many festivities. The first written document found about gingerbread makers in Hungary was from the 16th century.

Later, gingerbread became very popular as a gift. Gingerbread cookies were sold during fairs and festivals and they are still present at these events. These cookies are typically not eaten as they dry out over time and can keep for a very long time.

Many Hungarian families could not imagine Christmas without Gingerbread cookies. They make some to eat and some for decoration. They are also very popular wedding favors and decorations.

Tunde Dugantsi is a Hungarian gingerbread artist living in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Her main goal is to share the beautiful tradition of gingerbread decorating. She creates unique cookie gifts and decorations.

She has published books about cookie decorating and teaches cookie decorating classes. In her shop, you will find her books and cookie decorating tools.
